25 september 2019: For Studium Generale Utrecht, I gave a public lecture about lying, as part of their series on modern sins. Other talks in this series are about procrastination, being bored, being unreachable, and overconsumption/waste. I covered several deception related topics, including lying throughout time (is it really a modern sin or was it always around?), lying in the animal kingdom (is lying solely a human trait?), and more general information about why we lie and to whom. What is the effect of modern media and digitalization on our lying behavior? In the second half of the talk, I discuss several of our lie detection experiments, including a motion based and a language based lie detection study.
